Swaddling is an ancient practice used by many cultures across the globe. It consists of wrapping infants tightly in cloths or blankets to restrict movement of the limbs. Newborns usually respond positively to being swaddled, perhaps because of the resemblance to being in the womb. It is a tight, cozy and warm feeling that keeps them from flailing their arms and legs which can startle a sleeping baby. Studies have shown babies who are swaddled sleep better and longer, which means all of the new parents out there also get to sleep better and longer. Swaddling also helps keeps newborns on their back during sleep which will prevent any breathing restrictions.
